On 23rd April, the Military Council appointed him Commandant-General of the Army of the Irish Republic and President of the Provisional Government to be proclaimed next day.During Easter week Pearse served at the rebellion headquarters, the GPO, where he was in titular command only. At first, Pearse supported the Home Rule movement, which sought partial self-government through an Irish parliament rather than full independence from Britain.

He joined the Council, and on the day before the Rising its members appointed him vice-president of the Irish Republic and Commandant-General, Dublin Division, Irish Army.Connolly proved himself to be the most effective and inspirational of the rebel leaders during the insurrection.



James Connolly was a revolutionary socialist, a trade union leader and a political theorist. Pearse felt it was very important to preserve the Irish language. A provisional Irish government was proclaimed.

At 2:30 pm he surrendered unconditionally on behalf of the Volunteers and later issued orders to this effect.Pearse was court-martialled at Richmond Barracks on 2nd May. When he returned to Ireland in 1910 he found the Irish political environment more receptive.
