THE DEVIL, PROBABLY is surely one of the most schizoid film in Bresson's career: there are (literally) unleavened chunks of didactic discourse, droning lectures over immaculately edited stock footage showing atrocities done to animals (baby seals, etc.) King Arthur learns about his wife's, Queen Guinevere, affair with Lancelot, who at the same time remains loyal to the king, particularly after Arthur's traitorous nephew Mordred commits an attempt on his life. Charles drifts through politics, religion and psychoanalysis, rejecting them all.
A young priest taking over the parish at Ambricourt tries to fulfill his duties even as he fights a mysterious stomach ailment. That's even though Charles is carrying on with Edwige(Laetitia Carcano) who is having other affairs of her own.
The main character in this movie, who is 'more intelligent than the other ones' is confronted with political, psychoanalytical and religious gibberish, the misuse of scientific discoveries for the fabrication of deadly weapons (atomic bombs), economic (unrestrained growth, drugs) and environmental (pesticides) catastrophes, ridiculous police interventions and relational difficulties (real love is impossible).Keep track of everything you watch; tell your friends. and the planet. The 'dreamer' is Jacques, a young painter, who by chance runs into Marthe as she's contemplating suicide on the Pont-Neuf in Paris.

Robert Bresson works with ideas first and actors second, therefore, his characters chat, love, and confess like ambiguous intellectual beings. The resonant, purposefully ambiguous story is filmed with razor-sharp clarity. His mother dies and he resorts to pickpocketing as a means of survival. Certificate: PG
