Insomnia, the brand-new album by Skepta, Chip and Young Adz is a slick, catchy and a truly new-era rap album for the new school and the old school. UK rap group Young T and Bugsey had recently released “Plead the 5th” in mid-March, while J-Hus and M-Huncho dropped new music early in 2020. The old school and the new school together.‘Insomnia’ takes on an altogether more andante tempo compared to the historically 140 bpm grime style we came to expect of Skepta a few years back. Bringing everything they have to the table, the trio have made an album to go down in UK rap history.Opener ‘Mains’ sees Adz, Skeppy, and Chip deliver a pop-trap song ready for the (now-delayed) summertime. The album lines up the druggy daze of South Londonâs Da Beatfreakz on ‘Insomnia Interlude’ & ‘Star in the Hood’, the Bashment influence of East Londonâs Rxwntree on ‘Mic Check’ and the stateside stoned swagger of Texas-based Cardo in ‘Waze’.Despite the diverse sound, the albumâs atmosphere is stitched together by the metronomic carousel of the three rappers who systematically engineer, twist and layer each track to avoid the potential boredom of having a (nearly) posse cut for every song âincluding regularly mixing up their trademark flows and conjuring sombre sounds such as on introspective closing tracks ‘Traumatised’, ‘Sin City’ and ‘High Road’ â the last two produced by Dubai-based producers SOS.The albumâs riches only go to explain the reason why so many potential collaborations fall apart or underwhelm; not everyone can provide this level of selfless dedication to one another and to the project. The jumpy beat is met with electronically modified ad-libs, hi-hats and percussion throughout, a combination that helps to make this record one of the catchiest songs on the tape.Since release, the three rappers have already realised three UK top 40 singles off the back of Insomnia. But, Insomnia is not your typical album.On 22nd March 2020, the UK rap scene was caught off guard. They have featured on countless tracks together, including ‘Still Sit-in here Remix’ and ‘My Crew’.
