So, in the end, we were pleased we did not bring our caravan out to El Questro. We found Home Station to be a hive of activity. For this reason, El Questro is listed within 30 unbelievable camp sites in WA. As you do, we headed out for a look, and found the water barely flowing across; literally less than 10cm! Working with Western Australia Health restrictions to travel to and from the region from interstate and overseas, El Questro has introduced new terms to ensure the health and safety of our guests and staff. Zebedee Springs is pretty unique, and is an absolute must on the to-do list. The less people around you, the better your stay will be.The ultimate solution for many people is to get a private bush camp.If you arrive out of the blue at El Questro and expect to get a nice campsite (especially around peak season), you may be dismally disappointed. Stay somewhere private with incredible views and you will love it. There’s private bush camps as well as ‘caravan park’ style camping. Some people absolutely love it, and others wouldn’t ever go back, even just for the day. This huge area is all about tourism. Plus, it was going to be a hot day. We have heard so much about El Questro. Days 38-40: El Questro El Questro, Northern Territory16th-18th August, 2019Fri 16th August - Day 38 - Windscreen fixing in 'Kunners'We were up and away, out the door of the caravan park by 9am - this was less to do with any drastic efficiency improvements, and more to do with the fact that our b It was a bit too challenging for me (and sitting enjoying the tranquility of the middle pool seemed more appealing at the time).Middle Pool is where most people stop, as you need to swim across and get over that boulder before continuing on the much more difficult walk. Towards the end, the walk became even a little more difficult. We did not pass anyone as we walked along. El Questro is privately owned and, in our view, has top notch tourism marketing. Just arrive with some anticipation and you will have a brilliant time. None of them are overly technical, but many of the lookouts are steep and relatively narrow. There are water holes, at least 5 gorges to explore, a number of 4WD tracks, hot springs, a fantastic restaurant, guided and self guided tours and the list goes on. We do recommend off road caravans as the 16 km gravel driveway is very hard on other vans.
We travelled out on the sealed section of the Gibb River Road. Some have access to the water where you can swim (the first 5 sites), but most don’t.El Questro is a busy place, and being able to have your own slice of land along the river with no one to both you is the best thing we ever did. We are keen to see as much as we can of Australia and the world.
Certainly not the cheapest stay along the Gibb River Road, but it did include a brilliant boat tour for both of us, a few drinks and a lovely meal at the restaurant. You can’t visit in the wet season, and a large majority of the staff even leave for this period. The fresh water variety are usually timid and do not pose a threat to humans unless you physically annoy them. And often we have seen images on TV. I think you’d be OK if the track isn’t too bad and you let your tyres down and travel to the conditions. It is about 100 km from Kununurra. Each year, its visited by thousands of tourists from all over the world. One million acres probably doesn’t mean a whole lot to most people, so lets put it into perspective. When we arrived at the Emma Gorge waterfall we found another couple.
We found lush vegetation surrounding the thermal pools. The river crossing has a stony bottom that also needs to be approached with caution.
It’s developed quite the name for itself. I have always imagined myself swanning around The Homestead like Nicole Kidman in the movie Australia ( I do have quite a vivid imagination). Save big on a wide range of El Questro hotels! But once we settled into the water, we adjusted to the temperature. I most certainly wouldn’t take anything with limited clearance, and with an air intake less than 600mm from the ground!El Questro has a very slick marketing campaign, which attracts visitors from all over the world. We really enjoyed them as they could only be accessed by 4WDers and were reasonably free for us to enjoy.Technically not on El Questro, this famous river crossing is only about 20mins drive down the road. People were swimming and sun bathing at the swimming hole below the restaurant. The road into El-Questro actually crosses a stream so taking a standard caravan or sedan into the place may not be advisable a lot of the time and, of course, the whole place is closed during the wet season. We were really glad we went on our day trip. Alternatively, head into Kununurra; there’s a number of places that work on vehicles there.I’ll use the word ‘nearby’ loosely; this is the Kimberley we are talking about, and nothing is really a few minutes away! You can check it out, with fuel costs and everything else you need to know at Maybe you think I’m totally mad; did you enjoy your stay at El Questro?
