Although the early volumes of Ordeal of the Union were assailed by some Northern historians for being excessively critical of the abolitionists, Nevins believed, largely owing to his familiarity with the work of the white Southern historian, Ulrich B. Phillips, that any explanation of the coming of the Civil War must place race at its center. History at your fingertips The main point of Nevins' "Ordeal" is that the pressures and prosecution of the Civil War, bloody and tragic as that irrepressible conflict was, transformed a loosely-allied collection of cantonments into a unified, powerful nation, with the separate states subservient to a central, highly-organized Federal government that then had the wherewithal and the will to fulfill its TRUE manifest destiny. But Nevins was more than that, writing more than 50 books on subjects ranging from Henry Ford, John Fremont, Grover Cleveland, John D. Rockefeller, and Herbert Lehman.
