Capturing the essence of such an exotic persona in 10 songs was no easy task. Fans of Beck’s ramshackle, stoned folk as heard on I’ve gone back and reexamined every Beck album to attempt a fair (but still highly subjective) list of his greatest songs. The last song on 'Sea Change' entitled 'Side of the Road' certainly packs a punch. The first song off 'Odelay' to make it to the list, and a good place to start! It's a shame not many people know about this song. It's haunting, sad and above all, beautiful. The Essential Beck: "Loser, " "Devils Haircut, " "The New Pollution, " "Where It’s At, " "Sexx Laws, " "Lost Cause, " "E-Pro, " "Girl, " "Think I’m In Love, " "Nausea " The main part of the song that grabs me is the vocal melodies; it's catchy and will stick with you. Like Bowie, Beck has built a career on restlessness and reinvention, trouncing expectations impishly, almost recklessly.
The lyrics are weird, but suit the song well. 'Motherfucker' first appeared on 'Golden Feelings' but the better version is on 'Mellow Gold'. Whilst Beck is obviously an extremely talented musician, the thing that makes this album for me is the vocals - most of the time he sounds half asleep, but for some reason it seems to work.
The song itself is good, the only thing that lets it down for me is the lyrics.
Beck’s discography is a constellation of styles, moods, and modes, his career a series of lopsided gestures rife with as much dabbling and diablerie as genius. It's full of energy and excitement and it keeps you coming back for more.
I don't have much to say about this song, just go on YouTube and listen to it. "Watch out son, I've got a Taser gun, Watch out---" Ugh! While I think 'Guero' is an awesome album, there are few tracks that would make me go back for more. 'Erase the sun' is a song that wasn't released on any of the albums, instead it was released on the 'Deadweight' single as a B side, then later on it was released on the 'Odelay - Deluxe Edition' CD, which is a shame, because it's a killer track. A lot of Beck's best songs are the ones people don't talk about, but now I'm getting off track. 'O Maria' is a song that will get your fingers clicking. Apart from that, there really isn't much to tell you about the song. I still don't think this song should've been the last song, though. The song is just so unique and original. Much like 'Motherfucker' and 'Sweet Sunshine', it's noisy and distorted, but don't think that just because of that it's going to be exactly like those two songs. It get's stuck in your head so quickly! 'Ramshackle' is probably my favourite acoustic song from Beck, next to 'Nobody's fault but my own'. Beck is probably my favourite artist of all time and narrowing down all of his songs into 30 of my favourites is going to be extremely hard, but I will try. I'm not sure why, it just does.Again, I'll be honest with you, Beck's album 'Modern Guilt' really didn't do much for me. While rock-critic hindsight usually reveals this long-con approach as the thing that separates stars from legends, contenders from trendsetters (or, say, Warren Zevon from Bob Dylan), it also almost guarantees, with each new release, the increasing alienation of entire portions of a fanbase. 'Sing it again' is a calm, soft song that most people pass off as 'just another beck song', but I say it's more. It's really a 'You love it or you hate it' song. Though Beck allows himself a hearty guffaw followin… Sure, it does get old quick, but that's not to say it's a bad song.
But this languorous highlight of the Nigel Godrich-produced An easy, rolling country number, “Sleeping Bag” is one of the best of Beck’s early “serious” numbers (see also: “Devil’s Haircut” is the best of the three singles from Unless you hung out at Seattle’s OK Hotel on open mic nights in the early ’90s, or were on the mailing list for Bong Load Records (don’t lie — you weren’t), chances are, “Loser” was your introduction to Beck. I'm going to be honest with you and say that I'm not a big fan of beck's newest album 'Morning Phase'. 'O Maria' is a song you do not want to skip.Not many people seem to talk about this track, which saddens me, because it seems like one of the better tracks off 'Mellow Gold'. From beginning to end, it's non-stop AWESOME-NESS!!!
Even though this song is short, it doesn't leave anything out. I usually love it when Beck breaks away from the general tone of a song and starts something completely different, but this time I think it was unnecessary.The first song off 'Guero' is a catchy alternative rock song with a strong drum beat and a guitar riff that sticks in your head. It's truly a song that you need to listen to. 'Sweet Sunshine' is a simple song with a simple drum beat and a simple rhythm to it (I wouldn't of guessed).
I had heard other songs from the album before that, but 'Tropicalia' was the song that made me buy the album. It's a slow, noisy song, full of screaming, yelling, hatred and anger.
